| KENLY SILK - A TOUCH OF CLASS |
Along Hanoi's Hang Gai
street (known appropriately as Silk Street), Kenly Silk,
established since 1994, is one of the original silk
shops and enjoys a high reputation with ex-pats and
tourists alike. Previous clients inlude diplomats, New
Zealand PM Jenny Bolger, a Brunei Princess and Bill
Clinton's mother-in-law, no less! This family
establishment prides itself on excellent service (staff
speak a range of languages) and high-quality materials:
only the finest Vietnamese silks (taffeta, raw, satin,
etc), cottons and linens are used. Prices reflect the
high quality. The showcase shop has three floors
and a fabulous range of silk garments and exquisite
embroidered goods, many hand-made. At ground level,
ladies ready-to-wear garments include striking ao dais,
featuring more up-to-date styles (around $39), dresses,
tops (around US$28), plus luxurious throw scarves
($17-42), cashmere goods, lingerie and silk accessories.
The first floor is set aside for men, with pyjamas,
shirts, and ready-to-wear silk suits (around $115). A
small café area provides complimentary soft drinks and
beer, for those waiting on others to make their
minds-up! The second floor has an extensive range of
glorious hand-made silk shoes in a range of colours
(around $15). Kenly Silk also prides itself on an
extensive range of high-quality embroidered cotton
items. These include children's clothes with traditional
smocking, hand-made quilts, (around $68), duvet covers,
embroidered pictures and tablecloth sets ($53).
Made-to-order clothes (including wedding dress orders)
are in the hands of highly skilled tailors originating
from HCMC (reputedly the best in Vietnam). They also
have a shop in HCMC: if you order in Hanoi, you can
collect in HCMC and vice-versa; it's perfect if you are
travelling around the country. |
